Pros: Low-profile, simple to setup/start, expandable, touch screen
Cons: LED, Cheap-plastic parts, expensive fixture
The California Lightworks Solar System 550 is a decent little light but a little overpriced. My first grow light ever was a UFO shaped 120W LED, and this highly reminds me of that. The UFO LED was only $80 compared to the staggering $800 price tag for the 550 LED. The SolarSystem 550 comes with ratcheting hangers, which I appreciated, though they only reach about 2' of height adjustment; which is plenty for this light. I initially tried clipping the hangers directly to the light, only to find out the light does not balance when setup like this. I grabbed some v-hangers, clipped the ratcheting hanger to the tip of the "v" and that did the trick!
The light connects to their controller via a telephone cord (nostalgia). The controller is HIGHLY reliable/responsive and a touch screen too! I have tried other light controllers, but this is the first that worked instantly right out of the box. The preset "BLOOM" setting is running and I look forward to customizing my own light setting in the future. There is a count down clock so you never have to remember which week you are in (super handy for a tester like myself). The programable light outputs of Red/Blue/White are so cool to the data nerd like myself. I wish the light was as affordable as the controller #There #iSaidIt.
This light was a downgrade from a 1000W DE HPS. Most of the plants were moved outside to the summer garden, and I only needed a small footprint (electric bill) to sustain my remaining seedlings. I will hang onto this light for my cloner as its a perfect one-two-punch!
If you too are in need of a small LED light for propagation or cloning that is on a fully programable timer, this is the one for you!
